Editorial standards
What readers can expect from Velaris Brief.
Reporting, analysis and opinion are kept apart
Every article carries a label. News, analysis, opinion, investigations and fact-checks serve different purposes and are never presented as one another.
Sources
Factual claims are attributed to named sources, with a link where the source is public. When a claim rests on a single source, or we could not confirm it, we say so.
Evidence and inference
We separate what documents and reporting show from what we infer. Where evidence is limited, we state what it does not prove.
Pictures and graphics
Photographs and video frames are credited where the source is known. Illustrations and generated images are labelled as such, and are never presented as photographs of real events. Maps name their data source.
People in pictures
We do not name a person shown in a photograph or video unless a reliable source establishes who they are.
Corrections
When we find an error, we correct it and note the correction, with its date, at the end of the article it affects.
